The 10th Annual Welsh Road Safety Awards recognised good road safety practice, innovative projects and personal contributions being undertaken in Wales. The Award Scheme, supported by Motaquote, Wales' leading Insurance Broker - the company behind i-Kube www.i-kube.co.uk publicises and raises awareness of the contributions towards road casualty reduction targets.
The Wales Road Safety Awards are presented in recognition of individuals, groups and organisations that have made a real commitment to road safety - above and beyond what would normally have been expected of them. Award recipients are not road safety professionals, but they have been undertaking road safety professionally.
Significant effortsare being made throughout Wales to help motorcyclists ride safer and more responsibly. The BikeSafe project in North Wales has been particularly proactive and has accommodated almost 1,000 riders in the last three years alone with assessments and vital encouragement to take further instruction through IAM, RoSPA and ERS. The success of the scheme is in no small measure due to the number of experienced civilian riders. These riders provide their own bikes, fuel, time and insurance for such use, all fornominal expenses. It is obvious that the reason these valued people give their time and experience is to see others carry their skill forward. It is vital volunteer work that contributes significantly to safer motorcycling.

Craig Jones, Teacher at Sanfields Primary School |
In order for road safety education in schools to be as effective as possible, the support and enthusiasm of teachers is vital. Craig Jones is a school teacher at Sandfields Primary School, responsible for PHSE at the school and has shown great enthusiasm for Road Safety consistently over many years. He has initiated and coordinated several schemes including the Road Safety After School Club and Junior Road Safety Officers Club. Bringing the two clubs together the pupils ‘Name and Shame’ ‘zigzag’ parkers on a regular basis. He has successfully secured a grant from Warburton’s Bakery for Hi-visibility jackets and umbrellas. As well as being a teacher, Craig is also a cub pack Leader and used the Road Safety packs to involve his cubs in Road Safety. He has encouraged the pupils to take notice of their surroundings in order to take responsibility in looking after their personal safety, especially in the light of the massive changes within the immediate vicinity of the school. His enthusiasm for the topic has been infectious to the pupils and their involvement in all the Road Safety team initiatives. He has kept a record of his contribution to Road Safety since 2004 and is held in high regard amongst other teachers in the county borough.

Ron Mounsey, McDonalds
Local MacDonald’s franchisee Ron Mounsey and his team of staff at seven at his restaurants across South Wales recently hosted the Go safe ‘Deadly Mates’ campaign launch. His restaurants are distributing the leaflets and displaying large hard-hitting posters, prompting young drivers to think more responsibly. Thousands of young people are served at the restaurants and drive thru’s every month and he hopes it will raise awareness of the risks of reckless driving and peer distraction and directly help reduce the number of accidents and deaths of young people on Welsh roads.

Pictured left to right: Rob Morgan, Motaquote; Susan Storch, Chair Road Safety Wales; award recipient Joanne Yeo and Sarah Morris, Vice Chair Road Safety Wales.
Joanne Yeo is Secretary of the Safer Communities Action Group Road Safety Sub Group in Carmarthenshire, the work of which she promotes through various sources including the local press. She is continually fund raising for the group and in her own time looks for ideas for future campaigns/events. Joanne organises Walking Buses for 4 primary schools and has assisted in sourcing funding for Hi-Visibility vests. She also volunteers to deliver the Kerbcraft scheme and throughout June 2010 she organised and delivered a Road Safety Road Show. In 2009 she also supported the Road Safety Unit Child Safety Day. Joanne has a passion for road safety and has been extremely proactive in her promotion of a variety of road safety project in her community. All her efforts and time have been given freely and she is a perfect example of how to promote road safety with nothing more than passion and commitment.

Towards the end of 2009 a DVD film called COW was released and became a national and international sensation. The powerful film by Peter Watkins-Hughes, named "Cow" after its main character named Cassie Cowan, was enhanced with computer technology and depicts a multiple car road crash. Working with Gwent Schools Liaison department and Tredegar Comprehensive School, the film depicts the crash, which is caused by a young driver texting and its emotional aftermath. It highlights the impact and reverberations on family, friends and the whole community. The film has been widely seen throughout the UK as well as in the USA and on YouTube. COW has been adopted as the focus of the Pass Plus Cymru workshops and it will also be a feature of the Gwent Megadrive programme in 2010. It is now being used as a resource on several levels and has many threads and themes for follow up.

Swansea Road Safety Team recently held its annual Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) Club Conference. It was held on Wednesday 14 July 2010, at the Scout & Guide HQ, Brynmill, Swansea.
All primary schools in Swansea that participate in the scheme were invited to send their JRSOs along for the day. A total of 63 children from 19 schools attended and had a great day.
The day was based on Road Safety and included sets from South Wales Police, Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service, Get Cycling and the Swansea Road Safety Team. All the JRSOs had great fun and learnt a lot about road safety. This knowledge can then be passed on by them to their school friends, teachers and families.

The winners of this year's Road Safety Wales Awards, were presented with their Awards, which are supported by Chevron, at the Road Safety Wales Conference dinner on Monday 28 September at the Celtic Royal Hotel, Caernarfon.
Coleg Sir Gâr, Carmarthenshire, was recognised for their innovative, modular ‘Young Driver Programme’ which enables participants to make informed decisions and become confident, competent drivers.
Sandra Howells, a School Crossing Patrol at Holy Name School, Fishguard, has been dedicated to the role for twenty eight years. She is regarded as a highly valued member of staff by the school and the Pembrokeshire Road Safety Team. Sandra takes every opportunity to promote her SCP role in the community and is an excellent example of the SCP personnel.
PC Phil Westbury displays high levels of enthusiasm and commitment in road safety initiatives aimed at young drivers in the Dyfed Powys region. Utilising his local knowledge of the young driver database, PC Westbury successfully initiates and supports awareness programmes for this difficult to engage group.
Nominated by Denbighshire Road Safety Team, Katie Benbow was a friend of David Wares, a young driver killed in 2008 when he lost control of the car he was driving at speed. Katie was moved to compose a song in his memory. A DVD of the song ‘To Day’ is now used to raise awareness of the consequences of inappropriate speed.
Eileen Evans and Tony Armstrong are highly regarded Kerbcraft volunteers in the Wrexham area who go beyond the call of duty and are a credit to the scheme. Much respected and appreciated by the schools, they provided invaluable support to the Wrexham Road Safety Team.
Corus Strip Products UK has taken the effective step of introducing stringent procedures specifically designed to tackle a minority of employees who displayed poor driving skills and attitudes. The scheme has significantly reduced on-site incidents and is an excellent example of pro-active road safety action in a commercial setting.
Congratulations are conveyed to the winners picture below with Phil Thompson, Chevron Pembroke Plant.
